DAY ONE:
I researched into the different genres of existing music magazines. The most popular genres were: Pop, Hip-Hop, Rap and Rock. I had a brief idea of who my target audience would be. All I knew was that they would be ages 16-21. I personally love soul music and I knew that I was within my target audience. However I did not know many people that enjoyed soul music so I thought it would be hard to find others like me, however I decided to still go with it because I thought it would be worth the shot- but I later discovered many of my peers do listen and know soul musicians, which was a great discovery and it would mean I would have easy access to them to ask for their opinions on my magazine.
DAY TWO-FOUR
So I had chosen my genre- Soul. THe next step was research. I conducted a lot of research and this heavily influenced keeping to my chosen genre.
In short points:-I saw there was a gap in the market for soul music as I was unable to find any magazines that were focused on soul and where often mixed with another genre.
As I conducted more research the following day, I changed my mind and realised it was perhaps a better idea if I had soul as my main genre but also merged it with another genre so it could make the magazine even more specific for a niche audience. I came across a few soul magazine's ,
THE SOUL SURVIVORS - I had a look through their online magazine and found that I could hardly recognise any artists, and being part of my audience I had a feeling they wouldn't either
NU-SOUL MAGAZINE- Again, same problem.
SOULM8-Once again, it was a struggle to recognise anyone!
Even though it was annoying that I couldn't find any soul magazines I could take inspiration from, I was really pleased because I had a clearer idea of what kind of soul music I wanted my magazine to be about- something fresh and new! And maybe even have a twist of something classic! Idea's , Idea's, Idea's!
DAY FIVE-SEVEN
Whilst I was brainstorming idea's for my magazine, I started thinking of many different ways I could conduct my market research. I went on Wikipedia and got a list of all the artists associated with soul music (my chosen genre). I then put these into a list. This is the list:This was to find out about which artists my target audience were familiar with because there were a wide variety of soul artists so I needed to condense it down and knowing which of these artists most my audience listened to would not only help me with the content I could use- I would know which artists to include on my front cover as perhaps sell lines. I knew that if my audience's recognised a certain artist they would feel more interested in reading it. Having a condensed list of artists would massively help me with the overall genre and feel to the magazine.
I printed off three copies. The reason I chose three copies were because I was planning to have one copy for me- to ask people in my college. I have two close friends who go to different universities and thought it would be a great opportunity to extend my research and pass the questionnaire onto them to ask their flat mates and friends.
I spent the whole day asking people to fill in the questionnaire, and it got a little messy!
The way people ticked it started to get a bit crazy and even a little food got onto the sheet!
I typed up all my results and have decided that I will put all my results together once I receive my results from the students at the two universities as well and then and create that condensed list!
